Congratulations! You did it. You landed a great new job. You should be over-the-moon excited. Instead, you’re nervous and stressed. Sound familiar?
If it does, don’t panic. Most new hires are anxious about that first week on the job and it’s a completely normal reaction to have. However, the good news is that there are some steps you can take to not only make it through, but knock it out of the park. Here’s how:
Aim to learn.
While you might have all sorts of thoughts and ideas, strive to learn instead during that first week. Keep your ears and eyes open, absorbing everything you can about the culture, your co-workers, the leadership team, and potential challenges you’re already spotting. Also, take advantage of every training and learning opportunity offered to you. Even if it ends of being boring and tedious, any small nugget of information you can glean is valuable.
Speak up where you can add value.
That said, if your new team is struggling in an area where you have extensive experience, don’t be afraid to speak up and offer an idea or a helping hand. When you do, just tread lightly so you don’t step on toes. At this point, you’re still learning the dynamics of the team and the personalities of each of your new co-workers, so it’s best to play it a little safer during your first few days on the job.
Connect with co-workers.
That first week is an overwhelming one. But don’t turn down offers from your boss or co-workers to take you to lunch or out for happy hour. After all, these are the people you’re going to be working with day in and out and they can have a big impact on your career success and job satisfaction. Make an effort to go out and socialize with them, so you can get to know each one on a more personal level.
Ask questions and for clarification.
You probably want to impress your new boss. But don’t let this desire stop you from asking questions or getting clarification. Your boss does not expect you to know or understand everything being thrown at you. It’s therefore up to you to get the extra support and information you need by asking questions and also taking notes so you don’t have to ask the same one twice.
Don’t stress too much.
When it comes to starting a new job, the first week probably won’t be all sunshine and rainbows. But don’t start questioning your decision about taking the job, as a result. Also, don’t start comparing your new employer to your old one. Instead, keep an open mind and also know that it takes time to get acclimated and feel comfortable and confident in any new role.
