You need to set goals because: ‘If you’re not sure where you’re going, you’ll probably end up somewhere else!’
What are the goals that, on your deathbed, you will either be glad you achieved or regret not having achieved? You never regret what you do – you only regret what you don’t do! Goal setting will help:
build relationships at work when you align your goals with those of your boss and the organisation;
build your self-confidence as you achieve your goals;
separate what is important from what is irrelevant;
understand what is important for you to achieve;
make you satisfied with your life when you are sat in your rocking chair at the age of 90!
When you set goals, you have to want to achieve them, and the reason for that has to be stressed strongly to ensure that you will achieve them. You don’t have to hit all your goals at once, but start with the ones that matter to you most and will make the biggest difference once you achieve them. Appendix 4 has a proforma goal-setting form that you can use to set your goals;
